Richard W. Pound

Richard W. Pound was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at McGill University in 1962. The following year, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at Sir George Williams University where he made the Dean's Honour List. In 1964, he earned a Chartered Accountant degree and became a member of the Order of Chartered Accountants of Quebec. He completed his Bachelor of Civil Law degree at McGill University in 1967 and has been a member of the Bar of the Province of Quebec since 1968.

Currently a partner and member of the Firm's Tax group with Stikeman Elliott, Mr. Pound has pursued a professional career as rich and fulfilling as his academic achievements. He is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1978 and was elected to the Executive Committee in 1983. He is Chairman of the Olympic Games Study Commission, as well as Chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where he oversaw, inter alia, all Olympic television negotiations, marketing and sponsorships. Since 1999, he is Chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Richard W. Pound has demonstrated a keen interest in sports since a very young age. He was a double swimming finalist at the 1960 Olympics in Rome and gold, silver and bronze medalist at the 1962 Commonwealth Games.

In addition to his activities as lawyer and member of the IOC, Mr. Pound has taught at McGill and Concordia Universities, as well as at the Quebec Real Estate Association. He also directed the publication of several books in the legal and business fields and authored a book entitled Five Rings Over Korea: the Secret Negotiations behind the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

Several universities and organizations have recognized the merits of Richard W. Pound. He is Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) at the United States Sports Academy and Doctor of Law (honoris causa) at the University of Windsor.

The Canadian Government appointed Richard W. Pound Queen's Counsel in 1991. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and has been Fellow of the Order of Chartered Accountants of Quebec since 2000. He is an officer of each of the Order of Canada and Ordre national du Québec.

Despite his demanding schedule, Mr. Pound has always deemed it important to participate in community and social organizations. He was Chair of the Board of Governors of McGill University from 1994 to 1999, and has been Chancellor of McGill University since 1999. He is also Honorary Consul General of Norway in Montreal, has served as a member of the Federal Court Bench and Bar Liaison Committee from 1999 to 2002 and from 2003 to date.
