Rémi Marcoux
Since founding Transcontinental in 1976, Rémi Marcoux's life has been inextricably
linked with the growth of this jewel of Québec inc. Under his direction, the little
Saint-Laurent printshop with 30 employees and sales of "close to" $4 million in its
first year has grown to become a North American leader with more than 12,000 employees
in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, and sales of $1.8 billion in 2001. Today,
Transcontinental is one of the 10 largest printers in North America and the leader in
Canada in most of its niches. The Corporation is also Canada's largest publisher of
consumer magazines and the country's second largest publisher of community newspapers.
Finally, Transcontinental is also engaged in the door-to-door distribution of
advertising material through its well-known Publi-Sac.
Mr. Marcoux directed each stage of the company's geographic expansion and
diversification into new products and services. He is Transcontinental's majority
shareholder, a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
From 1968 to 1975, Rémi Marcoux was part of the young team of Quebecor managers that
surrounded Pierre Péladeau, a team that demonstrated that it was possible for native
Quebecers to build a world-class corporation. When he left Quebecor, Mr. Marcoux was
vice-president and chief operating officer.
Mr. Marcoux is a graduate of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, where he
received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1969, followed by that of Fellow
Chartered Accountant. He also completed the Owner President Management program at the
Harvard Business School in Boston.
On a more personal note, Mr. Marcoux is actively engaged in several fundraising
campaigns for a number of social and community organizations, including the
International Centre for Conflict Resolution and Mediation, whose mission is to combat
violence in schools. He is also on the Board of Directors of various Canadian
corporations, including the Canadian Tire Company and MAAX.
Mr. Marcoux is married with three children.
