Martin Schwartz
President and Chief Executive Officer
Dorel Industries Inc.
While attending McGill University back in the late 60's, Martin Schwartz's entrepreneurial spirit enticed him into a new venture, the manufacture of television stands. Such was the birth of Ridgewood Industries, today an important contributor to Dorel's ready-to-assemble furniture division, Ameriwood Industries. Prior to Dorel's initial public offering in 1987, Ridgewood merged with Dorel Company Ltd., then a juvenile business established by his father, Leo.
The new public entity was launched in 1987. Martin has played a prominent role since the outset, providing the vision and strategy for the fast-paced growth, now so closely associated with Dorel.
Today Dorel is a global consumer products company and the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of juvenile products in its categories as well as North America's largest marketer of bicycles. 2004 sales exceeded US$1.7 billion.
In addition to his regular executive functions, Martin is the spokesperson for the corporation, spending considerable time meeting with shareholders, the investment community and the media.
Despite these demands, Martin Schwartz has made the community a priority. He is active with various sports and charitable organizations in the Greater Montreal area, providing the same type of guidance that has helped Dorel Industries succeed.
