Galen G. Weston is Executive Chairman of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada’s largest food distributor, and a leading provider of drugstore, general merchandise and financial products and services.
Four years ago, Loblaw Companies undertook a renewal plan designed to ensure the growth and stability of the business well into the future. During that time, Mr. Weston has overseen significant improvements in fresh foods, the strengthening and growth of the President’s Choice and No Name brands, the emergence of Joe Fresh Style as one of the country’s top fashion brands and the addition of T&T, Canada’s leading Asian supermarket chain to the Loblaw portfolio of banners, positioning it to serve the growing ethnic customer segment.
An advocate of food sustainability and diet as solutions to health-related issues, Mr. Weston has led a range of initiatives that include an industry-leading sustainable seafood policy, the reduction of plastic bag use and the establishment of the Loblaw Companies Limited Chair in Sustainable Food Production at the University of Guelph. Loblaw is helping tackle these complex issues in ways that enable it to compete successfully today while preparing for the world of tomorrow. It is a highly strategic, values-based approach to doing business that helps us serve our customers better and, in so doing, makes Loblaw a higher-performing organization.
In 2010, in concert with Corporate Knights, The Report on Business recognized Loblaw as the top Corporate Citizen in Canada.
Mr. Weston has been with the company for 11 years. He is a Director of Wittington Investments, Limited and has served as a Director of George Weston Limited. Mr. Weston holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. He and his wife Alexandra have one son.
