Born May 29, 1964, in Quebec City, the son of Gordon Donald Simons and Barbara Lynn Schneider. Third in a family of four—two daughters and two sons—the fifth generation to oversee La Maison Simons Inc.
After completing high school in his home town, Peter D. Simons studied pure science at Carleton University. He went on to study economics at the University of Western Ontario where he would later be admitted to the Richard Ivey School of Business HBA program. In 1986 he began his career in the retail fashion business his family had run in Quebec City since 1840.
A real company man, Peter took over the family business with his brother Richard in 1996 after working his way up the corporate ladder. As new president, he would usher the firm into a bright and modern future. In addition to supervising the team of buyers, he is in charge of all expansion and construction projects. He also keeps a watch over day-to-day operations and works on special projects. His mission is to perpetuate a strong family culture while meeting today’s challenges and remaining mindful of both the environment and technology. He believes that no organization can afford to stand still, but must work every day to secure the future while remaining faithful and connected to its clientele.
Peter is a man of action and unbridled interests who lives life with a capital L. His positive energy and inquiring mind serve him well in meeting the ever-changing needs and interests of shoppers. He believes the company must take things one step at a time, building recognition and skills along the way. His main motivations are strength of character, hard work, tangible results, and clear goals and strategies. He puts his trust in talent and forward thinking to do more and do better. He has a flair for finding and surrounding himself with talented people and for valuing the work they do. He firmly believes that the past and present hold the keys to the future, and that success is a measure of the effort you put into achieving it.
Today Peter Simons and his brother Richard oversee a thriving company of 2,000 employees with seven stores in Quebec and a state-of-the-art distribution centre. La Maison Simons is a name Quebecers are proud to celebrate for its integrity, excellence, and enduring reputation.
In June 2006 Peter Simons’s vision and deeply held values caught the eye of Jean Coutu, president of the Jean Coutu Group, who appointed him to his board of directors to gain the benefit of his business savvy.
Peter’s great determination and charisma also served another cause: that of convincing his family to back him in a project dear to his heart. After four years of hard work, he acquired the Tourny fountain in France, had it restored on Île d’Orléans, and donated it to the people of Quebec City on behalf of the Simons family. Since its installation in front of the Parliament Building in 2007, it has become a tourist landmark and powerful cultural symbol for Quebec’s capital city.
